How Improving Your Frameworks and Processes Can Increase Employee Retention
When You Help Build Resiliency, You Create Loyalty
At least a couple of times in my recent career, I’ve had team members say that they were offered a job elsewhere, but they stayed because of how I treat them.
Despite the bugs that popped up or the extra income they could have made, they stayed.
I didn’t pry too much, but I believe it’s because I’ve spent time making sure that I protect teams from things like:
Burn out
Too many projects
Lack of psychological safety
Getting angry when things aren’t perfect
Being pressured by stakeholders to “squeeze it in”
I take care of teammates and direct reports.
And in doing so, I did this:
Created frameworks and processes that focused on top priorities for customers (corporate goals first)
Put boundaries in place for new requests and deadlines (no sneaking extra projects directly to team members)
Became their advocate when they needed time to improve their internal processes and systems (you can’t expect a car to run if you don’t maintain the engine)
Adjusted for when they got sick or had family concerns (true work-life balance)
Put buffers in their bandwidth to account for unforeseen dev, vacation, and the inevitable sick days (you can always add more tasks later)
If you want people who are genuinely loyal, beyond a paycheck, treat them well. Don’t burn them out or treat them like a machine.
The agape love you show them today has real, lasting impact.
