How many times have we heard stories of people from less-than-acceptable backgrounds making their future bright? Breaking negative family cycles? Being the first in their family to go to college?
There are also the stories of growing up in a poor home only to become financially stable (if not wealthy).
I didn’t exactly grow up poor. But we weren’t well-to-do either. I grew up for the first 8 years of my life in a single-wide trailer. The next few in a townhouse. And eventually, in my teenage years, a house.
Though my dad gave his everything, worked tirelessly to improve his career and provide for his family, my mother squandered away his money, ultimately leading to a divorce in said townhouse.
I vowed to never rely on another person financially. To pave my own way. To give my children a life that I could have only dreamed of. I also became the first in my family to finish college.
One common theme
In all these stories of rags-to-riches or moving from an abusive environment to a peaceful one, there is one common theme.
It doesn’t matter where you came from. It matters where you’re going.
It matters what you do with your life. Not allowing your current situation to dictate the rest of your life. Picking yourself up and striving for better than you’ve known.
Sometimes people manage to do it on their own. A large portion of the time, they have help.
